The Arizona Dream Act Coalition Thanks Maricopa County Community College Board for Standing with DREAMers

Phoenix, AZ.  Today, The Arizona Dream Act Coalition will attend the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) Board Meeting to thank board members for allowing DREAMers to continue their college education. Recently, MCCCD received negative backlash for granting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients in state tuition, and last month, in an effort to overturn the board’s decision, Maricopa County Attorney General Tom Horne went as far as filing a lawsuit against the community colleges.

The support from the Maricopa Community College Board to Deferred Action grantees has not gone unnoticed by DREAMers in the community. They will attend the board meeting scheduled by the MCCCD board today to share their gratitude and to hand them thank you cards with messages written by members of the community.

What: DREAMers Attend MCCCD Board Meeting to Thank its Members

When: Today, Tuesday September 24, 2013

Where: Maricopa Community Colleges District Support Services Center (2411 West 14th Street Tempe, AZ 85281)

Time: 6:30 PM
“Before Deferred Action, undocumented students like myself were forced to pay the out of state rate of $317 per credit instead of the $81 per credit in state residents currently pay” stated Arizona Dream Act Coalition member Jhannyn Rivera. “It was an incredibly frustrating situation that forced me to spend four years at Glendale Community College not knowing when when I would be able to complete my degree. Although I am grateful for my education and the memories I made there, I am also grateful that my undocumented peers, thanks to DACA now have the option of attending community college full time” concluded Rivera.
Visuals will include DREAMers speaking in front of MCCCD board members as well as DREAMers handing board members thank you cards.
